A hybrid mattress combines two ways of making a mattress: a layer of coils, under layers of foam or other comfort materials.
How it's built
At the bottom is a layer of coils, often each one wrapped in fabric so it moves on its own. Above it are the comfort layers, foam, latex, fiber or a mix, which decide how the surface feels. A cover goes over the top, sometimes quilted with more padding. Each maker has its own designs and names for these layers, and each mattress's details say what it uses.
How it compares
An innerspring mattress has coils with a thinner layer of padding, and usually feels bouncier. A foam mattress has no coils, so its surface feels more even and you sink in a little more. A hybrid sits between them: the coils' bounce underneath, the foam's feel at the surface.
So if you like the lift of a spring mattress but want more cushioning on top, or like foam but would rather not sink in as far, a hybrid is worth trying.
Sizes and weight
Hybrids come in the usual sizes, from twin to California king. With their coils, they can weigh more than a foam mattress of the same size, which matters on narrow stairs or if you'll move it yourself: ask how delivery works when you buy.
Caring for it
Most makers suggest turning a mattress head to foot every few months, especially in its first year, so that it wears evenly; its care instructions say how often. Keep it on the support its maker names, and use a mattress protector to keep it clean.
What to think about
Hybrids are often thicker and heavier than other mattresses, so check the height with your bed frame and foundation, and measure the stairs and doors it has to come through. The comfort layers decide how firm it feels: a plush hybrid and a firm one can sit on the same coils. As with any mattress, try it the way you usually lie, for several minutes, and sit on its edge too, since some are made with firmer edges than others.

Our Beautyrest mattresses include hybrids, like the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three and the World Class Hybrid mattresses. Lie on them next to the others to feel the difference, and see how to choose a mattress for the rest.
